"Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe (Amazon Link)
A milestone in African literature, Things Fall Apart is cited among the greatest novels ever written. Considered the archetype of a modern African novel, it portrays the Igbo culture of Nigeria in a sympathetic light, showing its culture and traditions before the advent of Christian missionaries and colonialism and later its effects. It is considered Achebe’s magnum opus and paved the way for future African novelists. The publication of the novel in English did incite controversy but Achebe explained how he has weaved in traditional proverbs. The title comes from the poem ‘The Second Coming’ by W B Yeats.
