"Durdamya" by Gangadhar Gadgil (Amazon Link)
“So inspiring! I remember reading this book for 10 consecutive hours in CoEP Library, possibly the longest time I have sat at a stretch over there.”
This is a biography of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the Indian freedom fighter from Pune. He was a proponent of “Purna Swaraj” (Total Freedom) and being a part of the Extremist faction of the Congress when it split between them and the Moderates. Tilak was also sent to Mandalay in Burma as punishment where he wrote ‘Geetarahasya’. Famous for declaring “Swaraj is my birthright, and I shall have it”, as a member of the Lal-Bal-Pal trio, he cooridnated with Lala Lajpat Rai from Punjab and Bipinchandra Pal from Bengal. He began the public celebration of the Ganeshotsav and Shivaji Jayanti festivals to foster public unity against the British. He also began the newspapers Kesari and Mahratta.
